Anchorage is a unique community or roughly 3,000 residents, organized as a "fifth-class city" within Jefferson County, KY. It was named for the riverboat captains who began to build their stately residences there in the late 19th century. It is known for its pastoral (and affluent) lifestyle, with a heavy tree canopy, walking trails and perhaps most importantly, it's own Anchorage Public School system. The Anchorage Public School serves grades K-8 and earns some of the highest academic achievement scores of any elemantary/middle school in Kentucky. If you're considering a home in Anchorage because of the school system, it's critical that you contact the Anchorage school system at 502-245-2121 to inquire if the exact address you're considering is part of the Anchorage School district. The district's boundaries were originally drawn around the landowners' property lines. Some wanted to participate in the school system, while some did not! Therefore, the district's boundaries are somewhat irregular.
In addition to the school system, Anchorage has its own fire and police departments. All of this is funded by an incremental Anchorage School/Fire/EMS property tax that adds about .5%-.75% to what most homeowners in Jefferson County pay.
